Types of Ants
There are many types of ants - each with distinct appearances, habitats, and diets. If you have an ant infestation, knowing the type of ant will help to determine the appropriate treatment plan for your situation. Here are some common types of ants:
Odorous House Ants
Odorous House Ants are a dark brown to black color and tend to live in cracks in walls or under floors. They ofen seek shelter indoors after it rains and are named after the smell of rotten coconut that their bodies emit after they are killed. They are attracted to sweet food sources, and sometimes will settle for meat or grease based food.
Carpenter Ants
Carpenter Ants usually have a reddish brown color and can be very large. They prefer to dwell in hollowed out or rotting wood. Shavings and dead ants near wood can be the sign of a colony nearby. Carpenter ants do not eat wood but prefer sweet or meat-based food sources and they can sometimes have an appetite for other insects.
Pavement Ants
Pavement Ants can be light brown to black in color and get their name from their tendency to build nests in crevices in pavement or under concrete or stone. They then move indoors to look for food to bring back to their colony. They eat a wide variety of things and will eat most of what humans eat, though they prefer grease based foods.
White Ants
"White Ants" are not actually ants at all - but termites. The name is a bit of a misnomer, and treating a white ant infestation incorrectly could be a very costly mistake.
