Termites in your house?

Many people don’t notice termites have infested their home until the damage has already been done. But if you notice white winged insects in and/or around your house, then it might be a good idea to assess the damage.

Termite damage can be very detrimental - they tend to hollow out pieces of wood and leave just thin layer on the surface which gives the appearance that nothing has gone amiss.

The first thing to look out for is thin pencil sized tubes on wooden beams in or outside your home. Termites build their nests in the ground and then build these exploratory tunnels to connect their nest with a food source.

Swarmers (also commonly and mistakenly referred to as “flying ants” or "winged ants") often come out and during the day, usually after it has rained. Swarmers are termites that have left their colony in order to establish a new one. If you see them either in your house or around the outside of your house, that is a sign that there may be an infestation.

What should you do if you have termites in your house?

There are numerous products that claim to be "Do It Yourself" solutions - but be careful. If improperly applied, or if the nature of the infestation is not correctly identified, these solutions can be ineffective which will prolong your infestation (as well as further the damage to your house). If you have ground (subterranean) termites, do it yourself solutions are highly discouraged due to the multitude of factors that need to be considered. The bottom line: unless you happen to be a pest control expert, it is a good idea to consult with an expert before begining your treatment plan.
